The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
