For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories constructed from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a moment that could contain the means to overcome him for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the theatrical production The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. That traitor in the tunnel was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the endgame conflict that awaits.
