Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Ashes Squad
England have opted for a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, showing there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if the spinner makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted several previous Tests.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.
But the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they perform and excel out here.”
