Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life in Prison

He fought the legal system and the law prevailed.

Sixty days after getting a 27-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, former president Jair Bolsonaro now looks destined for incarceration.

Imminent Incarceration

The adjudicated coup-monger – who had been under house arrest in his residence while a number of judicial steps and appeals play out – is largely predicted to be jailed in the coming days, amidst growing talk that he will be transferred to a well-known top-security prison.

Previous Statements on Inmates

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the conservative former paratrooper showed little sympathy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

Allies Voice Concerns

Lucas is not the only voice speaking out prior to the former president’s expected imprisonment.

Authoring in a prominent newspaper, one more backer, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to see “the greatest unfairness in its history”.
