Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.

"Returning to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.

A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Characters

It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Iconic Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he received the offer from the series creator.

"I recall the conversation. I recall the small talk. I remember him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.

"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fans

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.

"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Theories and Excitement Run High

While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange communal scenario. The chance of a self-referential narrative, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.

Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
