Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Dispute
The video footage, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in military or security capacities.
"As we did, you all swore an vow to safeguard and support this founding document," the officials affirmed in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can decline improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that break the legal system or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reply
The recorded statement appeared to prompt a angry reaction from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Harmful to our United States. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats released a combined statement condemning the comments.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our nation with tremendous national pride and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged online messages and retract his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the statement stated.
Representatives' Firm Response
The officials who were featured in the video also published a statement.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who care for this country and made an pledge to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No warning, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the ex-president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "Every American must join forces and censure the former president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
Additional Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the capital punishment of public representatives."
He stated: "This represents an clear THREAT. All senators, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's without precedent in US history."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of sedition" but that "lawyers have to parse the terminology and establish all that."
White House Response
During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "We see active officials of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the US military, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can result in disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
