Canada Cleared of US Allegations of Manipulating Skeleton Olympic Selection Event

Canada's skeleton athletes have been absolved of charges that they rigged a selection race for the upcoming Games, which allegedly denied rival athletes a chance to qualify.

Central Claim and Investigation

US skeleton veteran a five-time Olympian alleged the team from Canada of withdrawing four of its six competitors from a recent event in New York. She claimed this shrunk the competition, making fewer qualifying points available. Despite winning the event, Uhlaender did not secure her berth for the 2026 Olympics.

“The current IBSF Rules allow National Federations to pull competitors from an event at any time,” stated the governing body.

After reviewing the matter, the federation announced it would not impose sanctions, rejecting the allegations as there was no breach of its code.

Canada's Explanation

In response, the Canadian federation stood by the withdrawals, citing athlete welfare and the need for rest. They stated that some athletes had competed extensively that week and the decision was “appropriate, clear and aligned with both their well-being and the integrity of the sport.”

Representatives of the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had voiced “serious concerns” about the selection system's integrity.

The Athlete's Future

The 41-year-old athlete, the Milan-Cortina Games are planned to be her final Games. Her path to qualification remains, the likely US team spots are projected for Kelly Curtis and Mystique Ro. Uhlaender is a 2012 world gold medalist whose best Games result was fourth place in 2014.
