A minimum of 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's history.

Four police officers were among those killed during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho reacted using shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, authorities said.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Local Reaction

Residents have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network have been expanding their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Rio's police said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the raid, in addition to numerous weapons.

The joint operation by civil and military police comes after a year-long investigation.
